The Brief

The Continuity Company (TCC) has been a key sponsor of the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) for over a decade. The overarching theme for the 2019 global summit was one of environmental awareness and sustainability. Exhibitors were encouraged to embrace the theme through the stand design and implementation of their stands and to consider, wherever possible, the environmental impact of their exhibition stand. Recycled and recyclable materials were to be considered along with other factors that affect the carbon footprint of attending a global show, including a consideration for energy efficiency.

Vancouver was the host city for CGF 2019 – its Convention Centre was the perfect fit for the theme of the show as it is fully committed to being as environmentally friendly as possible. The centre is home to a six-acre living roof, black water treatment plant, seawater heating and cooling system as well as an ambition to become a zero waste to landfill facility in the near future.

The brief from our client? ‘We want something different; a place to meet new and existing customers and a place to forge relationships.’ We couldn’t agree more – after all, good relationships make this business, so we set about designing an experience that gave TCC’s customers a talking point, was inviting and encouraged them to stay a while.

The Solution

Dijon worked in collaboration with TCC and in true, fearless style, we decided to see just how far we could push the design of the stand to consider every single aspect of its impact on the environment whilst delivering a striking design that was on brand, on message and striking.
Our answer to a challenging brief was to design a stand out of cardboard and paper…

Molo was integral to our design. This Vancouver-based company specialises in paper products for the exhibition and interiors industry.

Their products are beautifully designed and are absolutely stunning. We knew instantly that this was perfect to meet the brief. The products are made from recycled materials and are themselves, fully recyclable. We created a beautiful and inviting bar area and sides to the stand using Molo walling, and used Molo seats and benches to create inviting areas for visitors to engage with our client and admire the stunning space.

The Activation

We engaged a local build partner who provided the basic structure of the stand – no elements were shipped from the UK. We purchased Molo and hired additional elements locally to minimise the environmental impact of transportation and even designed a bespoke ceiling which was made from cardboard.

Minimal low wattage LED lighting was employed – possible as the large bay windows that sit within the Convention Centre allowed natural daylight to flood the hall as well as providing a stunning vista over Vancouver Bay.

We used subtle low wattage LED tape to illuminate the Molo walling which added to the overall effect as the natural wood pulp within the paper product was highlighted – the result was visually stunning.

TCC has a reputation for supplying delicious coffee at CGF and this year was no exception. We arranged a full Barista coffee service – also sourced locally. Fair-trade coffee was served to delegates in recyclable cups and the water provided was sourced through an ethical water company with an inspirational story to tell.

The Results

The stand received fantastic feedback not only from the organisers of the show, its delegates and venue management, but also from a wider audience via social media .

The seating and other elements of the stand became slightly worn as the show progressed due to the nature of the products, which gave the stand a ‘lived in’ feel which added to the overall impact of the design.

We proved, without a doubt, that it is possible to deliver a truly environmentally friendly exhibition stand with a low carbon footprint and which has a positive impact on the local economy by approaching a brief with an open mind and a fearless attitude.
